Who We Are

The Back Door is staffed entirely by volunteers from churches within our community.

Funding comes from churches of several denominations, the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church Of Canada and from individuals, service clubs and businesses in the community.

Staff support:

Rev. David Moore and Janet Wylie of Simcoe Street United Church.

Responsibility for oversight of this growing ministry is carried out by the Mission Committee of Simcoe Street United Church.

What We Do

The Back Door Ministry is a needs driven mission. We will endeavour to meet whatever need an individual brings to us. Listed are the main components of our mission.

- Meal Tickets, We are the largest provider of St. Vincents Kitchen meal tickets for the poor and homeless in Oshawa, providing in excess of 300 meals every week.

-Grocery Vouchers We provide grocery vouchers so that families can obtain fresh milk and other items not available through the food bank system.

-Food Pantry We have a small pantry of non-perishable foods and personal care items that we can give to families or individuals in urgent need.

-Community Meals Every few months we host community meals where anyone can come for free. These are opportunties for social interaction as well as getting a nutritious meal. The main ones are our Christmas Party in December, where everyone receives a gift bag, and our June Barbeque. We typically serve between 200 and 300 folks.

- Referral We provide links to many social service, health care and other agencies.

-Advocacy From time to time we will take on direct advocacy with court, ODSP and other issues.

-Community Development We work with the Durham Advisory Committee on Homelessness, the Social Development Council of Ontario, interfaith and other community groups to advocate for social justice and poverty reduction with all levels of government and society at large.

-Education One of our staff or volunteers would be happy to come to your group to speak about poverty in Durham and ways in which you can take action to make our neighbourhoods a good place for all. Please call the Church Office to arrange for someone from the Back Door Mission to come as a guest Speaker to your group function.
