Greetings to those who are visiting our website the week prior to our final service here on April 14, 2024! You are welcome to join us for a great celebration this Sunday either in person or online. The organ will play one more time with some great hymns and service music. Our choir has joined with Kingsview's to prepare for some Anthems during the service of worship. There will be a reflection marking some of the significant influences socially and theologically that we have been shaped by over 200 years. We will share many of your memories and letters for the occasion that you have sent us. This website will soon close and you will be redirected to Kingsview United Church website where we will continue to meet.
As the downtown United Church in Oshawa, this place has held an important role civically, pastorally and spiritually for our growing city. We have many church neighbours including United Church congregations close by who have closed in the last short while - even since the pandemic. So we add our name to the good company of folks who have faced similar hard decisions and have been called to surrender their lives to something new. It takes bravery to be the generation that releases the old, in anticipation of what the Spirit of God is accomplishing in a new generation. We join that host of churches in saying "thanks for having had the chance at adding to the spiritual life of downtown".
Though we will have our final service on April 14, the Back Door Mission will continue to do the work of partnering with Mission United to care for the marginalized community. Part of our legacy as a congregation is the 30 year old seed for this Mission. It is the challenging conditions and dynamics of the community we all share, that the church and others have found a context to grow in wisdom and compassion and helpfulness and as disciples of Jesus. Thanks to the Back Door and Mission United. Thanks to the many volunteers who will continue to allow this building to be a "stone of help" to many who are our family members and neighbours. May it be that those 20,000 visits annually are blessed with peace, grace and hope for many.
As a congregation we have shared the context for much ministry in many different forms over two hundred years. It is with pride we leave this legacy. The building itself will go on to be a witness to the presence of a loving God.
This website will be maintained for a short period following our final service. But do visit Kingsview United Church for worship links and opportunities for fellowship and Christian formation.
Blessings,
Simcoe Street United Church!
